The Swedish National Maritime, Transport and Military Museums (SMMTF) provides advice and support to regional and local museums, societies, organizations and individuals who work with maritime, transport and military history.

SMMTF strives to enable meetings and discussions with authorities as well as non-profit and commercial actors in the maritime, transport and military history area about common challenges and opportunities.

In cooperation with the museums support associations and other parts of civil society, SMMTF supports non-profit museum operations and runs and participates in various forums around, among other things, historically valuable ships, train and railway history, shipbuilding historical associations, lighthouses, naval ships and its cultural heritage.

SMMTF also assess the cultural-historical value of ships and leisure boats, lists culturally and historically interesting ships and offers economical subsidies to owners of historically valuable ships.

The Board of Military Traditions is an expert group that provides advice on Swedish military traditions, including questions about flags and standards, medals, heraldic weapons and uniform insignias, primarily to the Swedish Armed Forces and to other authorities associated with national defence.

SMMTF provides practical support and grants to Sweden’s Military Heritage Secreteriat (SMHA), a nation-wide network of military history museums.

SMMTF is also involved in research collaborations in the broad field of transport history.
