The SMHA Secretariat provides practical support and grants to a nation-wide network of military history museums.

SMHA is responsible for documenting and preserving Sweden’s military history, with a particular focus on sites and environments from the Cold War period. A smaller number of museums within the network focus on earlier historical periods.

From North to South

The museums and visitor sites within the SMHA network are located throughout the country – from Abisko in the north to Kristianstad in the south. Many have a specific focus, such as artillery, naval warfare, armoured vehicles, aviation or infantry. Others present permanent installations, including fortresses, coastal batteries or underground hangars. Some sites also interpret and present Sweden’s earlier military history.

Applications for Government Grants

The Swedish National Maritime, Transport and Military Museums (SMMTF) provides financial support to museums working with military-related history. The aim is to contribute to a living cultural heritage that is preserved, used and developed within the field of military history.

The government grant is intended in particular to strengthen knowledge of the development of national defence during the twentieth century. It also enables the interpretation and presentation of historical events and phenomena linked to this development, at sites across the country that are of significant importance to Sweden’s military history.
