The Board of Military Traditions is a group of experts providing advice about Swedish military traditions, including questions about flags and standards, medals, heraldic weapons and uniform insignias.

When questions arise concerning traditions within the defence sector, the Board of Military Traditions is frequently consulted. These may include matters such as the design of uniform details, medals, colours, standards and command insignia. Questions may also concern heraldry – that is, the design and use of coats of arms, profile products and flags, as well as the appropriate use of symbols.

The Board of Military Traditions provides advice primarily to the Swedish Armed Forces and to other authorities associated with national defence. The Board does not take formal decisions; instead, it issues recommendations.

One of the Board’s key responsibilities is to provide advice on the design of new flags. Once a flag has been produced, a traditional flag-nailing ceremony is held, after which the flag is formally presented during a ceremonial event.

Composition of the Board

The Board comprises the State Herald at the Swedish National Archives ,three members appointed by SMMTF, and three members appointed by the Swedish Armed Forces. The Director General of SMMTF serves as Chair.
